The Philadelphia 76ers — the few of them that were available — were dismantled by the Detroit Pistons on Thursday 131-109.
It’s hard to believe the Sixers could get
more shorthanded than they already were to start this week… but they did! For Thursday, Philadelphia was without Joel Embiid (oblique), Tyrese Maxey (finger), Paul George (suspension), Kelly Oubre Jr. (elbow), Adem Bona (back) and Andre Drummond (back). They did not have an available center.
It went just about as expected. The only surprise was a few legitimately good minutes of basketball from Philly in the second period when the Sixers cut a 17-point deficit down to just four. But then, as it always does, the third period came around and reality caught up. The Pistons built a lead of more than 20 points going into the final frame and that was all she wrote. Detroit pulled their starters early, and Nick Nurse allowed VJ Edgecombe to get some rest early as well.
The hospital Sixers have Friday off before getting back to work on Saturday, hosting the Brooklyn Nets in an early afternoon matchup. Maybe they will get a reinforcement or two from the injury list by then.
Until then, let’s get to the Bell Ringer. And don’t yell at me in the comments that we’re still doing a Bell Ringer — let me give some little shoutouts to the guys that did the best for Philly considering the impossible situation they were put in tonight.
MarJon Beauchamp: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block
The only (and I do mean only) benefit of these Hospital Sixers nights is getting to watch some players we don’t always see get a little run on the floor. Beauchamp was that player tonight, and he seemed to want to take advantage of the opportunity right away. In just under 10 minutes played in the first half, Beauchamp put up 10 points on 4-for-6 field goal and 1-for-3 long range shooting.
Whether the game was already out of hand or the Sixers were in the middle of that little second frame run, Beauchamp looked confident and cool — nothing like a guy that doesn’t get time on an NBA floor. He wasn’t afraid to pull up and shoot from long range or to take it straight into the paint up against Detroit’s Isaiah Stewart.
Honestly, if there are going to be games like this where the opportunity for a win is just completely unrealistic, it’s good to see Nick Nurse actually turn to guys like MarJon and give them the opportunity to show their stuff while developing on an NBA court.
Beauchamp certainly made the most of his chance, at least.
Beauchamp finished with a team-leading 17 points on 7-for-13 field goal shooting with six rebounds, two assists and a block.
Cam Payne: 15 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists
OK, sure, it’s not a career-high for points and threes like the last game. But that doesn’t mean Cam Payne wasn’t trying to find ways to create scoring bursts where he could! His presence was especially important early (before the game got out of hand) as one of the only perimeter threats the Sixers had tonight, sinking two of the team’s eight total triples. Payne was also able to get some drives going and drew a couple of fouls in the process. Even if the stats don’t always show it in points or assists directly from his hands, Payne continues to be a decent, consistent offensive leader for the Sixers when they’re shorthanded and need him to be.
Payne finished with 15 points (two triples) with a rebound and two assists in 18:32 off the bench.
Justin Edwards: 12 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals
It almost looked like Edwards night was going to be over before it even started when he was forced to sub out early in the first after being hit in the eye going for a rebound. Fortunately, Edwards was able to return and have a pretty decent game (again, all things considered here), especially on the defensive end.
He was able to become a big thorn in the side of the Detroit offense, getting in the way and being rewarded with four steals throughout the contest, one of which came off some full-court pressure on Cade Cunningham (below). Edwards also chipped in some points when given the opportunity, had some really good passes and was the Sixers’ top rebounder for the evening with nine boards, three coming on the offensive end.
Edwards finished the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Jabari Walker: 16 points (6-for-6 FG, 2-for-2 3PT, 2-for-2 FT), 1 rebound, 2 assists
Roughly half of Jabari Walker’s points in this one were scored when the game was all but over and the white flag had already been waved, but we’ll give him a shoutout anyway for his efforts — especially considering his perfect 6-for-6 field goal, 2-for-2 three-pointer and 2-for-2 free throw shooting tonight.
His biggest contribution when the game wasn’t out of hand was a timely triple (again, extremely hard to come by for the Sixers tonight) in the first period to help keep the Pistons lead from getting huge early on. That, and frankly just being one of the biggest guys the Sixers had available helped Walker be a passive contributor on both ends of the floor, even if it wasn’t a majorly flashy stat night for him.
Walker finished the game with 16 points, one rebound and two assists in 18:18 off the bench.
