I have to admit, a Devonte Wyatt extension at this point of the offseason was a bit of a surprise.
I figured if anything, Tucker Kraft was next in the pecking order, but the Packers have methodically checked off every possible extension on their to-do list before getting a deal done that could reset the tight end market, so maybe it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise.
League-wide, I think the reaction is going to be similar to what we saw from Christian Watson’s extension. People who don’t know what Wyatt
can do are going to see the contract numbers and his playing time stats from the past few years and wonder what the Packers are doing.
And to be fair, that’s a decent point of contention. Wyatt really hasn’t played much. He has cracked 400 snaps in the regular season just one time in his four years with the Packers, and hasn’t hit that figure since 2023. Sure, he’s been good when healthy, but the “when healthy” portions of his career have come even less frequently than the oft-criticized Christian Watson’s.
But when he’s on the field, he’s really good. Just look at how poorly the Packers’ defensive line played without Wyatt on the field last year. It was a night and day difference. Retaining Wyatt at least keeps him as an option for most of the season, assuming whatever injury he inevitably sustains won’t shake the boat too badly.
But all moves come with risk, and the Packers are laying out quite a bit of money for a player who’s almost literally never been healthy and who’s already 28. Defensive linemen tend to age a bit better than most, but he’s a far cry from what the Packers had in the eternally young Kenny Clark, who seemed to be permanently 24 years old. Maybe that makes him a bigger risk than the potentially still ascending Christian Watson and Jordan Reed, but if he can be a key contributor this year — preferably a healthy one — it’s probably a risk worth taking.
