West Virginia didn’t waste time putting La Salle away on Monday night, cruising to a 4–0 win at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers are now 2–0 and have outscored their opponents 9–2 through the first week of the season.
Marcus Caldeira opened the scoring in the ninth minute, then added another late to finish with a brace. Thijs Veldhorst pushed the lead to 2–0 right before halftime, and freshman Bryce Swinehart got his first career goal midway through the second half to put the game out of
reach.
The Mountaineers dominated every stat line, finishing with a 26–4 advantage in shots and forcing La Salle keeper Tino Kneis into 10 saves. The Explorers also played a man down after a first-half red card, and WVU made sure there was no way back from there.
Goalkeeper Marc Bonnaire handled the only two shots on frame to secure West Virginia’s first clean sheet of the season. The Mountaineers are back at Dick Dlesk next Wednesday, September 3, when they host Gardner-Webb at 7PM.
