The deadline day collapse of Liverpool’s move for Crystal Palace and England centre half Marc Guehi was one of the biggest stories of last summer’s transfer window, with Palace manager Oliver Glasner believing there was no time to replace Guehi in the squad and blocking the 25-year-old from making the switch to Anfield.
With Guehi’s Palace contract set to expire at the end of the season, there has been a feeling ever since that the Reds would like to sign the player on a free next summer and for many
they remain favourites—though in the time since, Guehi has been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Manchester City.
It’s City who could prove most troublesome, particularly following widespread reports they may not be content to wait for summer due to a defensive injury crisis. Assuming they’re seriously in the mix for Guehi and have begun talks with the player’s camp about a summer move, that could mean moving up plans to get him now.
Despite Liverpool also having injury issues that appear to have them one short at the back, there has been no suggestion so far at least that the Reds would consider accelerating their own interest in Guehi, and if they do in fact retain interest it rather seems a case of summer or nothing for them, at least for the time being.
