Uli Hoeneß is not happy — what else is new? This time, the ex Bayern Munich president has his sights set on FC Barcelona and their massive pile of debt. Speaking on the TV show Doppelpass hosted by Sport1,
Hoeneß did not mince words.
“Barcelona — that’s obviously not the model I envision,” he said (via DW Sports). “In any other country, they wouldn’t even be playing in the top division any more. I mean, if you have €1.3 billion in debt — how is that possible?”
“I can’t understand how they’re still in the division,” Hoeneß concludes.
To be fair to him, it’s not like La Liga didn’t try. Barça have used practically every trick in the book to get their transfers worked out, even being forced to register them late — see Dani Olmo for example. The accounting tricks used by Joan Laporta to get his deals over the line were affectionately dubbed “levers” by the Spanish media, and became a meme a few transfer windows ago.
To be fair to Laporta, it is hard to rebuild when you are stuck in the financial equivalent of a black hole due to mismanagement by the previous administration. However, from an outside perspective, it is hard to see how Barcelona keep getting away with it — millions spent on transfers every summer, repeated run-ins with La Liga, and an ever-ballooning debt burden.
This house of cards surely has to tumble at some point, right?
