The mask worn by El Grande Americano in his match against the Original Grande Americano at AAA’s Noche de Los Grandes is up for auction at WWE’s online store. Per the product description:
This authentic AAA match-used mask is the one El Grande Americano wore through that fight, hand-signed across the back and left with the frayed edges, torn openings and gold-and-silver scars from the main-event battle. The front still carries the El Grande Americano crest,
but the damage around it is what turns the mask from gear into evidence.
Bidding began Friday and quickly reached four figures. According to WWE Shop, “100% of the net proceeds from this auction will be donated by WWE directly to the Dr. Sonrisas Foundation, supporting children facing life-threatening health conditions.” Bidding closes on June 25.
Two weeks ago, Americano defeated the Original Grande Americano in a critically acclaimed Mask vs. Mask match. With the win, Americano is now the only El Grande Americano. As for the OG, he was forced to unmask, revealing himself to be Chad Gable.
What began as a silly gimmick by Gable to mock lucha libre ultimately became a source of national pride when a second Americano emerged after Gable was sidelined with injury. In his place, the new Americano embraced lucha libre and Mexican culture to become one of the country’s most popular stars, rivaled only by CMLL’s Místico.
As wrestling memorabilia goes, the mask’s value could appreciate over time as items from stars like Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan have gone for six and seven figures, respectively.
