Reported this morning by Pete Thamel, Damon Stoudamire has been let go as Georgia Tech’s men’s basketball head coach after three seasons.
As noted in the tweet, Tech finished with a horrid 12-game losing
streak this season (the worst in school history), becoming one of the first teams eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by failing to qualify for the ACC Tournament over a week before the final week of games.
Damon’s tenure was billed as a chance to increase the recruiting status of Tech, coming from the Boston Celtics’ bench and lots of NBA experience with him. This year was the first with five-star recruit Mohammed Sylla, but Tech never could figure out a full core to build around, especially with the departure of starting point guard Naithan George to the transfer portal last offseason.
Tech made one postseason appearance under Stoudamire in 2024-25, losing to Jacksonville State at home in the first round of the NIT.
Damon was the 15th full-time head coach in Tech history. His 44 total wins are the fewest by a head coach at Tech since Dwight Keith who went 35-21 from 1943-1946.
Any kind of turnaround from this is going to require significant investment from the athletic department that we have not seen yet from Ryan Alpert’s staff. They’ve done a great job with football, getting the gameday environment right, and making students more involved, but this team has become the sore spot on campus and absolutely no one wants to see them get left behind.
Tech now will be left with two head coach openings as men’s golf coach Bruce Heppler is retiring after the golf season.
