According to Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos have waived cornerback Damarri Mathis. The former fourth-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft had been consistent rotational depth in the secondary over three seasons, stepping in to larger roles due to injuries at various times.
However, he was also inconsistent
at times and was a guy that would ultimately struggle for a roster spot if the Broncos added more talent. That seems to be what is happening in year three for Mathis.
Damarri Mathis was selected by the Broncos in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh, where his physical style and run support stood out in college. Over three seasons, Mathis appeared in 43 regular-season games (18 starts), accumulating 102 tackles (81 solo) along with 9 pass deflections and zero interceptions. In 2024, he appeared in 10 games, but only had three total combined tackles and one pass defense.
As Klis noted, he could be a guy that gets claimed on the waiver wire. However, in my experience, few players actually get claimed in this process. More than likely he’ll be free to sign to a team’s practice squad later this week.
