Who is the best cornerback on the Dallas Cowboys roster? This is a difficult question to answer, and unfortunately for the worst kind of reasons.
DaRon Bland begins the season with the most pedigree of the group having been named an All-Pro before, and Shavon Revel carries an air of excitement as he is only a year removed from being one of the more exciting draft prospects by the team. Still though, neither of them necessarily feel like sturdy options to pick as answers to this question.
Enter Cobie
Durant. An afterthought of a free agency signing and someone who has become more known than anything for his jersey number in that he hasn’t given it up to rookie phenom Caleb Downs, Durant is only a handful of practices into his Cowboys career and yet it looks like he is the best player in his respective room.

Calling anyone the best or worst anything right now after a handful of practices is making quite the mountain out of barely a mole hill, but facts are facts to this point. And at this point Durant is flashing more than anybody else and had a particularly strong showing during the group’s first padded practice on Monday. The mothership’s Patrik Walker caught a great video of his interception that really shows how he managed to focus all the way through the play and pick off Dak Prescott.
Standing out in this cornerback room is not exactly hard (with all due respect). It was one of the positions of greatest need when the offseason began, and while the Cowboys did not address it as much as others, defensive coordinator Christian Parker has a defensive backs background. Perhaps he is an amplifier that makes everyone in the respective area better because of his knowledge and experience.
Whatever the case, Durant is making so many plays that the idea of him forfeiting his jersey number to the draft pick with the most pomp and circumstance in a decade isn’t even a talking point anymore. He is earning his keep.
This is exactly the type of thing that needs to happen for the Cowboys to reach the aspirations that we are starting to have for them. We know the players on the team who can raise the ceiling of the group, but the floor is what needs elevating. If enough Cobie Durants of the world are hit on by the team then the floor rises and so do all of the ships that rest upon it.
