Notes & Thoughts:
- Like most of you, I have been very disappointed in the offensive line. If you had shown me these snap counts before the season started, I would have assumed the line would be dominating its opponents.
- The dead horse has been beaten enough, but Nicholas Singleton having FIFTEEN more snaps than Kaytron Allen is bad coaching. Allen did not appear at all on Penn State’s final drive, including the disaster on 4th and 2. I had to double check my spreadsheet to make sure it was correct.
- We saw a bit more depth in the secondary this week, with 11 players making at least one appearance.
- The lack of depth at linebacker is stunningly bad. Dominic DeLuca is a very solid player, but he gets exposed when he has to play 96% of the snaps.
- The defense totaling 22 more snaps than the offense is a major issue. UCLA had 19 more minutes of possession time. The Bruins’ best chance to win was to maximize their possessions and keep Penn State’s offense off the field as much as possible. Credit to them, they executed it perfectly.
- After a big performance in the fourth quarter against Oregon, Devonte Ross disappeared. At least one of the receivers has vanished in the last few games. Very worrisome with better defenses left on the schedule.
