The Golden State Warriors are off to an excellent 4-1 start to the 2025-26 season. The vibes are good. At least for now it seems like the organization has complete buy-in from top to bottom. While it’s
far too early to know how this season will go, it’s a positive sign that the franchise will not need to undergo any massive transformations next offseason. Perhaps the biggest question is whether head coach Steve Kerr will return to the team. Kerr is in the final year of his contract and has openly shared a willingness to step away from coaching after the season. When asked about Kerr’s future on a pre-game show earlier this week, Dubs general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. acknowledged the situation but expressed confidence that Kerr will be back.
“Look, the reality is Steve can stay as long as he wants,” Dunleavy said. “He’s got great self-awareness. He knows where he’s at. We want him fully committed, and we’re respectful that he’s taking the season to evaluate things. I’m confident that he’ll be back and we’ll get something done.”
While some around the league have speculated that Kerr’s free agency could create a bidding war between other teams around the NBA, the reporting and comments around the team seem clear that is not on the table at the moment. Kerr will receive a massive salary to return to the Warriors if he wants to return. If not, he would take a step back from coaching, likely returning to a far cushier position in broadcasting.
