Bayern Munich loanee Alexander Nübel will be the starter for Germany vs. Ghana, but is this an audition for more than just a World Cup spot?
At some point, the post-Neuer era will officially begin in Bavaria, and it’s a transition that Bayern Munich have been quietly preparing for over several years. The big question is whether that transition should finally lead to Alexander Nübel becoming the club’s No. 1.
On paper, Nübel feels like the logical successor. Bayern Munich signed him from Schalke years
ago with exactly this long-term plan in mind, and his development through loan spells — especially his recent run of form at Stuttgart — has shown clear growth. He’s more mature, more consistent, and far more comfortable commanding a back line than he was during his first stint in Bavaria. At 29, he’s entering what should be the prime years for a goalkeeper.
But replacing Neuer isn’t just about form — it’s about identity. Neuer didn’t just guard the net; he redefined the role with his sweeping, ball-playing style. Bayern’s entire defensive structure has been built around that unique skillset for over a decade. The real question is whether Nübel can replicate enough of that profile to maintain continuity, or if Bayern Munich would need to adapt their system.
There’s also the pressure factor. Being Bayern’s No. 1 is one of the most scrutinized jobs in world football. Nübel has performed well on loan, but stepping into Neuer’s shadow at the Allianz Arena is a completely different challenge. We’ve seen talented keepers struggle under that weight before.
So, what do you think — should Bayern Munich hand Nübel a chance…or just ride with Jonas Urbig if Neuer retires? Tell us in the comments below!
