Right on the heels of the NCAA Basketball Tournament expansion, the American Football Coaches Association announced some schedule changes in anticipation of the College Football Playoff expanding.
The headline grabber is the AFCA calling for an end to conference championship games, but the other items desere attention as well. The AFCA board is also in favor of reducing in-season bye weeks from two to one; reducing the minimum number of days between games to no fewer than six and preserving an exclusive
window for the Army-Navy game in December (except for postseason games),
The NCAA’s Football Oversight Committee recently recommended that the regular season begin earlier, following the plan the NFL uses to gain more exposure.
These schedule change proposals are in anticipation of the inevitable CFP expansion with the hopes of finishing the college football season in a manner that aligns with the academic calendar and transfer portal.
It’s good to see that the coaches are trying to be a bit proactive with the calendar and I don’t think fans will be mad about a reduction of bye weeks. It won’t get the most attention, but enforcing a minimum time between games is the best of these proposals. Teams who play on Saturday should not be coming back to play weeknight games the following week and you can work around the bye weeks to fit in those games instead.
What are your thoughts on these proposals? Do you think the season will be starting too early? Will you miss the ACC Championship Game?
