What is the story about?

Jürgen Klopp’s first act as new manager of the German national team will be to attend the Franz Beckenbauer (formerly DFL) Supercup between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The new boss will get a good look at Westfalenstadion at a number of prospects for his first Germany squad, to be selected for the UEFA Nations League matches next month. It has not even been a full month since Klopp has taken over for Julian Nagelsmann after the latter’s resignation following a disappointing showing

at the World Cup, but his very appointment has bestowed renewed belief and excitement on the national team ahead of EURO 2028.

Klopp has already done his first round of official press conferences with the DFB and has certainly been in contact with various club managers and players, but scouting at the Supercup marks the beginning of getting down to business with the new Die Mannschaft. The encounter will feature a bevy of usual suspects for national team roster selections, though time will tell just how much Klopp will prefer to shake things up.

While the Germany boss may have a soft spot for his old club BVB deep down, Bayern Munich should be the main draw. Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl expects Klopp to be in attendance for the club’s first two matches of the season.

“I’m very sure that he will be at the Super Cup, and I’m very sure that he will be there for the first [Bundesliga] game against VfB Stuttgart. I think those are the games where his work really begins,” said Eberl (captured via @iMiaSanMia).

That first official Germany roster under the new manager is coming soon. Klopp has previously stressed the importance of striking the right balance between experience and youth, so it would not be too surprising to see some new or long-absent faces. Will it be the usual heavy contingent of Bayern players, or will Klopp go in the opposite direction?
