The Green Bay Packers worked out 10 players on Thursday, including four wide receivers. Apparently, one of them took, as the Packers signed Kaden Prather, formerly of the Louisville Kings, to a contract, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Prather was a seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Bills last season before he suffered a hamstring injury that led to him being waived with an injury settlement in late August.
With the UFL-winning Kings, Prather finished fifth on the team in receiving yards, posting
nine receptions for 148 yards over nine games.
Since Prather’s release from Buffalo, he had workouts with the Seattle Seahawks (October), Atlanta Falcons (December) and Miami Dolphins (December), but his tryout with the Packers was the first one that has been reported since he finished the UFL season.
Currently, Green Bay’s only injury at the receiver position is to Brenden Rice, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. The Packers’ roster is full, meaning that Prather’s addition needs to come with a corresponding roster move. That move has yet to be announced.
Back in 2025, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ranked Prather as the 40th overall receiver in the class and labeled him with a free agent grade. Here was Brugler’s blurb on Prather:
A two-year starter at Maryland, Prather was an outside receiver in offensive coordinator Josh Gattis’ pro-style spread scheme. He generated some buzz in NFL scouting circles over the summer, based on his 2023 tapes, although that seemed to cool — there wasn’t much of a jump in his 2024 performance.
Working outside the numbers, Prather is a tall target who adjusts well to the football and does a nice job working back to help his quarterback. However, he is a non-explosive receiver with straight-line tendencies, lacking suddenness in his breaks and consistency downfield (two catches of 30 yards or more in 2024; none longer than 35 yards). Overall, Prather has a rangy frame with solid hands and speed, which certainly gives him a chance to stick in the NFL, but the lack of a true distinguishing trait will require him to find a favorable situation.
In college, Prather registered 162 receptions for 1,966 yards and 12 touchdowns with West Virginia and Maryland. He started in 35 of the 48 games that he played, including 31 of 36 after his true freshman season. He only missed one game in his college career with an injury.
