The Cubs added a spare-part outfielder, Justin Dean, on a waiver claim from the Giants today.
Dean is 29 and made his major league debut last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and appeared in 18 games, recording one stolen base and going 0-for-2 in his only plate appearances of the season. As part of the Dodgers’ 2025 World Series Championship run, he made 13 appearances, all as a defensive replacement in centerfield, and recorded six putouts with one stolen base and one run scored.
The Giants claimed
Dean on waivers from the Dodgers in November.
Dean was the Braves 17th round pick in the 2018 draft out of Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina. He is a good defensive outfielder who hit .289/.378/.431 with 29 stolen bases for Triple-A Oklahoma City last year.
He has options remaining so he’s a guy who will likely spend 2026 at Triple-A Iowa as a guy who could be called up in case of injury.
With this claim the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands at 38. The signing of Alex Bregman has not yet been officially announced by the team; when it is, that will make 39.
