The Cleveland Browns signed big-bodied tight end Dae’Quan Wright out of Ole Miss to bolster the group’s depth. Wright (6’-4”, 255 pounds) is an athletic tight end but has been inconsistent as a blocker.
He went undrafted in April’s NFL draft and then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, but was recently waived.
In a corresponding move, the Browns placed CB Damarri Mathis on IR. In Tuesday’s practice, Mathis was carted off the field.
Wright began his college career at Virginia Tech and then entered the transfer
portal. He chose Ole Miss, where he played the past two seasons. In his college career, he played in 47 games with 113 receptions for 1,603 yards, a 14.2-yard-per-catch average, scored nine touchdowns, averaged 34.1 yards per game, and scored 54 points. In 2025, he was named Second Team All-SEC.

“Wright is a high-cut, tight-hipped tight end who can stretch the field vertically but lacks fluidity and bend for crisp route breaks from speed. He builds speed to threaten defenses, working the vertical limbs of the route tree. He can gain an advantage on linebackers when aligned outside. He’s big and strong enough to improve as a run blocker but needs better technique and commitment in that area. Wright projects as a Day 3 pick who should fight for a role as a TE3/4.“
Currently, the Browns tight end group consists of Harold Fannin, Jack Stoll, Blake Whiteheart, Brenden Bates, and fellow rookies Joe Royer and Ryan Carsen. Royer has not been present during training camp due to what has been described by the team as a personal reason.
The Browns will kick off the preseason on Saturday at 1 p.m. on WYTV-33.
