This Thursday at 8 p.m., the Fighting Illini square off against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers at Gies Memorial Stadium to open the 2026 football season.
As one would expect, the Illini come in as a heavy 27.5-point favorite with an over/under of 54.5 points, even though there are many questions surrounding this Illini team, both offensively and defensively.
UAB has zero returning starters on defense and a first-year head coach. But don’t overlook a Group of Five school. The Blazers have
several promising transfers and quarterback Ryder Burton, who showed positive upside last season.
The Illini could play a so-so game and get the W. But this team needs to make a statement early, and to do that, there are three key areas where that statement has to come from.
1. The Defensive Secondary
This is a must-prove-yourself game for new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck. His version of the 3-3-5 is highly touted and highly spoken of in the Group of Five context. The difference here is Hauck has at his disposal Power Four-level talent, primarily an elite-level secondary with Matthew Bailey, Xavier Scott and Juice Clarke.
It is this secondary that will be the key catalyst in the Illini defensive scheme. While the Illini don’t need to pitch a shutout, allowing anything over 10 points would be considered a disappointment.
2. The Offensive Line
With only one returnee from last year, this year’s trench warriors are going to have to come to play. This will be the game to build on, with Duke coming up in Week 2 and Ohio State in Week 4.
Starting with a dominant game against a decidedly weaker opponent is key. Don’t allow scouting coaches to spot a weakness in Week 1.
Katin Houser should have ample time to throw in this game and should never be on the ground unless he is carrying the ball. Likewise, Aiden Laughery and Ca’Lil Valentine should not be tackled behind the line of scrimmage more than once or twice.
3. High energy/Killer instinct
The Illini have to come out with a high energy level and sustain it for four quarters. At times last season, they left the enthusiasm in the locker room at halftime, and opponents capitalized on it.
At the same time, the Illini lacked a killer, blood-in-the-water instinct in games where they took an early lead. In this game and throughout the season, the Illini have to show they are not afraid to step on the gas when they have an opponent on the ropes.
Players to Watch:
QB Katin Houser
The new Illini signal caller has huge cleats to fill with the departure of Luke Altmyer. He is working with a new offensive line, but that could be a blessing in disguise.
The line came in with him and hasn’t spent two or three years with the same QB, getting used to how he works behind the line. So, in short, there are no old habits to work through.
Houser will have the benefit of experience and talent in the backfield and among the receivers. Houser has to prove he can handle the next step up. Facing an opponent at the level he is used to from his time at East Carolina — where he was able to torch defenses for more than 5,000 passing yards and 37 TDs in two years — he needs to show it wasn’t a fluke.
DB Xavier Scott
After a year off due to injury, Scott needs to announce he is back. I can’t think of a better game to do it than the first game of the year.
In 2024, Scott led the team in interceptions with four. He was second in passes broken up with six and second on the team in solo tackles with 43. He plays a lot bigger than 5-foot-11 with his athleticism.
RB Ca’Lil Valentine
Valentine has to be ready to take the next step as a feature back. He led the team in carries (131), rushing yards (638 yards gained, 616 net) and averaged 4.7 yards per carry, second best on the team. He also had four TDs.
He will need to step up at catching passes out of the backfield. He only had 10 catches for 55 yards. With his speed, getting him some passes in the flat or on a crossing route out of the backfield in this game could pay some big dividends.
DE Joe Barna
After two years of showing flashes as a reserve at both LB and DE, he gets his chance to assume the Gabe Jacus role as a pass rusher. He did have two sacks and one forced fumble last season.
This is a game where his size and strength could make him a very disruptive force in the Bobby Hauck 3-3-5 defense.
It all adds up to a big first win
This is a game where the Illini have a chance to come up big on both sides of the ball. There should be numerous chances for big plays in the passing game and passing defense.
If Barry Lunney Jr. opens the offense up, a 50-point game offensively is not out of the question here. Defensively, again, I don’t expect a shutout, but it could happen. With a new defense and first-game jitters, there is bound to be a mistake or two.
So again, keeping it around 10-13 points is where I would expect it to be.
So my prediction is:
Illinois 42, UAB 9
