However much time there is until the start of the Kansas City Chiefs
’ 2026 season, it’s too long. The recent history of Chiefs football has spoiled fans with plenty of postseason memories, but for a long time, the regular season was the best time to make memories watching football in Kansas City.
The blogfather, Joel Thorman, knows that as well as anyone. His favorite game came in the season before that one heartbreaking playoff loss to the Denver Broncos in January of 1998… against that same team.
What were your favorite games that came to mind? Here were the best submissions, starting with the ones that occurred at Arrowhead Stadium:

October 7, 1991. Our first Monday night game at Arrowhead in 8 years. It was a dominating 33-6 performance over the undefeated Bills. The crowd was electric that night. I’ve been to playoff games that had less energy. It was a magical evening.

2011 With not much to be excited about as a chiefs fan Kyle Orton leads the chiefs to beat the 13-0 packers

Halloween night 2011. Rivers fumbles with a chance to put the game away. Chiefs won. The players all ran out wearing Scream masks. The masks from Scream.

94 week 2 Montana vs Young. DT getting the safety. Joe and Marcus icing the game.

MNF Sep 29, 2014. I drove from Mississippi to Arrowhead and watched the Chiefs put Tom Brady on the bench. Best regular season game ever.

Chiefs vs. Niners in 2018 when Mahomes scrambled left, then circled back to the right and hit Chris Conley for a TD in the corner of the end zone. That’s when I knew he was special.

Eric Berry’s return to Arrowhead after beating cancer. It was a Thursday night game against the Broncos. The Chiefs ultimately lost the game on a Charles fumble that was scooped and scored, but the energy of Arrowhead that night was something I had never experienced in my life.

I would have to go with the Veteran’s Day game in 1990 when Derrick Thomas had 7 sacks against the Seahawks.

October 4, 1998 The Seattle rain game. It was a SNF game week 5. I remember the amount of rain that flooded the field. Then a lightning delay.
Now for the best of the road games in Chiefs history:

The November 19, 2018 Chiefs loss to the LAMBS, 54-51. What an incredible game.

I’m going to say the game where Chiefs held Peyton Manning… who’d been OWNING the Chiefs… to a 0.0 passer rating and was benched.

Jamaal Charles’ 259-yard game against the Donkeys in 2009 ruined the Donkeys’ playoff hopes.
Mahomes’ first game, also against the donkeys, when they still had most of their SB-winning defense intact, watching Mahomes running backward 10+ yards behind the line of scrimmage and the raw arm strength to deliver a pass 20 yards downfield. That moment I realized Mahomes was unlike any qb I’d ever seen. Made Albert Wilson look like an elite wide receiver for a game, and the Dolphins signed him to a major contract that offseason.

The iconic October 17, 1994, MNF game @ the old Mile High Stadium featuring the legendary quarterback duel between Joe Montana and John Elway.
Montana led the Chiefs to a dramatic 31-28 comeback victory, sealing the win with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Willie Davis with just 8 seconds remaining.
And a personal top-5 list from “saintschiefsfan” to finish us off:
Oh man, there are so many good and bad memories with this team. Without getting into obvious ones that fans have mentioned like the Rain game vs Seattle, Montana Magic on MNF against Denver and most of the Mahomes era(which should be a category in of itself. My top 5 good and bad
Good
5. Dwayne Rudd loses his helmet week 1 vs Browns 2002. This was an insane back and forth contest against the Browns. KC was down 30 -17 at one point in the third. Then, Priest Holmes went berzerker mode in the 4th quarter rushing for 3 TDs. Chiefs led a long drive for a Morten Anderson FG try. It was blocked. As the Cleveland celebration ensued, LB Dwayne Rudd threw his helmet resulting in a 15 yard penalty. KC got another try and Andrson knocked it in for a 40 -39 win. One of the wildest endings I have seen in a football game.
4. Aikman takes a beating . Week 15 against Dallas 1998. I remember watching this on my TV at work. I remember this one for several reasons. Dale Carter blasted Michael Irvin and knocked him out of the game early. The defense shut down Emmitt and the Cowboys run game. Bam Morris had almost 150 yards rushing. But what stands out the most was Aikman getting pumeld. There was no PFF back then, but this would have been a game they would have went nuts over. Aikman was only sacked 1 time, but was hit at least 15 other times. Every other play was him being picked up off the turf. KC won 20 -17 in a very dominate performance by the defense.
3. DT figures out the MN Vikings . Week 14 vs MN 1999. KC jumped out to a 21 -0 lead before the Vikings started to claw back . After a Rand Moss punt return for a TD(his only one of his career) to tie the game, KC marched back for a game winning FG. What stands out to me was DT reading Jeff George and jumping the snap count over and over again, so much so that they showed it on the broadcast. Hicks ran a TD back that DT forced. MN never made any adjustments to the snap count .
2. Chiefs epic comeback at Lambeau. Week 6 vs GB 2003. I remember watching this game with a friend after a long night of drinking. KC was getting smoked the first 3 quarters . The last thing I wanted to watch hungover was my team getting blown out. I begged my friend to turn the channel. He refused to do so, insisting KC would come back. They sure did. Favre turned into Favre and turned the ball over several times including a Jerome Woods pick 6. The game went into OT and Mazlowski scooped up a Favre fimble. Green hit Kennison for a bomb to win the game.
1. The day of miracles . KC makes the playoffs week 17 , 2006. The Chiefs beat the Jags in the final game of the 06 season 35 -30. It was a good game . But what really stands out is that day as a whole. On top of having to win that game, KC needed 3 other things to happen in order to make the post season. All of them happened. KC had like a 5% of getting in going into that game.
Honarable mention
KC ends Ryan Leaf’s career before it even got started week 3 vs SD 1998. The Chargers started out 2 – 0 to start the 1998 season. Ryan leaf was showing some signs as to why SD traded up to get him. That was until he faces the KC defense. Leaf turned the ball over 5 times and Leaf completed 1 pass on 15 attempts. His career never recovered.
