As you probably know, former Duke star Jayson Tatum has been in the news lately for a couple of reasons. First, because he took on an unusual role with Duke Basketball as chief basketball officer. He’ll be working with the team in a number of ways, basically mentoring the players. If he happens to be on campus when recruits come through, well, that’s a nice perk too.
He’s also been in the news because of his rehab/recovery after his surgery following an Achilles injuries in last spring’s playoffs.
This video of Tatum dunking has caused a lot of ruckus on the Internet. By all accounts, he’s made a huge amount of progress – startling to some people – and there is speculation he might be back sooner than expected.
Not everyone is buying in. Former Celtic Kendrick Perkins, for one, suggests that he might be rushing things and that he’s actually heard this: “The words I’ve got back from Boston is that they have to close the gym down and tell him to stay home. That’s how much he’s put into his rehab.”
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Tatum has really attacked rehab, and he could push things too fast (though presumably the Celtics medical team will rein him in if necessary).
Whatever the truth is, it’s certainly caught the public imagination.
