Every year, the season starts off with Utah Jazz Media Day, and it’s become one of my personal favorite traditions to grab the most interesting quotes. Here are the three most interesting quotes from today.
Walker Kessler was frustrated with his contract situation
This is the quote that made the most rounds this media day. Just a few days ago, we were told that Walker Kessler and the Jazz were on the same page regarding their contract timeline. Obviously, the Jazz wanting to enter restricted free agency before signing a contract differed from what Kessler wanted to do, which appeared to be having a contract signed and completed. Kessler mentioned he didn’t want to talk about it more this season, but this will now open the door for other GMs looking into things with Kessler. With opposing GMs seeing a crack in the Jazz’s relationship with Kessler, they’re going to try to meddle. Get ready for more trade rumors this season.
Also, Will Hardy, when asked about the Jazz’s poor defense, mentioned Kessler specifically. For fans, Kessler is likely considered one of their most impactful defenders. It does seem a little interesting that he would mention Kessler specifically. Is this a sign that Utah needs to see more from Kessler if they’re going to invest in him in a big way?
Ace Bailey on his split from Omar Cooper
Ace Bailey splitting with Omar Cooper was a big story this last week, and this was always going to be a question that came up. Bailey’s answer was short and sweet and somehow put any additional questions to bed. It shouldn’t be too surprising as who player’s use as their agent isn’t something that fans care too much for.
Aside from this, Bailey’s interview was pretty great. He has a really fun, happy personality. If he turns out to be great, you can see how he could become an iconic player for Utah and the Jazz.
Is Keyonte George taking a leap this year?
We’ve been hearing a lot of rumors that Keyonte George has played extremely well in offseason workouts. Now we’re hearing that Keyonte George is filling a leadership role for this team. It’s nice to hear, and it would be a welcome sight to see George take things to another level this season. George’s talent has been extremely apparent, but it was the efficiency, the decision-making, and the defense that needed to improve. The opening is there for George to take it, it’s just a matter of him doing it. With this being his third year, it’s now or never, because Utah is only going to keep adding more and more talent.
