The New York Giants made the first move of their final cutdowns that could be viewed as a surprise. The team waived LB Darius Muasau on Sunday afternoon, ending the 2024 6th round pick’s time with the Giants’ active roster.
At first blush, waiving an athletically limited sixth-round pick after a couple years isn’t a surprising move. However, it is notable thanks to how Muasau stepped in as a starter over the last two seasons. The former UCLA linebacker has played in 27 games for the Giants over the last two years,
with 18 starts at linebacker. He was never a great linebacker for the Giants, but his football IQ and competitive toughness allowed him to outplay perceptions of him when he was on the field.
Muasau played 1,231 snaps for the Giants over the last two years between defense and special teams, most of which came on defense.
It’s a mark of just how much the Giants have improved their linebacking corps that there isn’t even room to keep Muasau as a special teams player, let alone defensive depth. His is a name we’ll be watching to see if he signs with the Giants’ practice squad or if he’s claimed by another team.
