Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today, we’re talking about Labor Day. Hit the music!
Just a quick word on Labor Day and college sports. I know that the way current labor negotiations and contracts are executed isn’t ideal. The chaos of the spring transfer portal should give you enough of an idea on that front, and hopefully we’re headed toward a world where player agreements have a little more structure and a little less… whatever is happening in college football these days.
But as we celebrate the power of collective labor today,
I am glad that we’re living in a world where we’re figuring out the finer points of financial parity and also paying players at least a fraction of what they’re due. For a long time, our enjoyment of college sports was predicated on the lie of amateurism and the promise of under-the-table hush money, and every attempt at kicking that very stupid system to the curb was met with a steady stream of, “Yeah, buts.” No more.
Does that fix every problem? No, but it feels better knowing that guys are getting a little out of what they’re putting into their labor.
Enjoy your Monday!
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
The nation’s no. 4 bars squad is set to lose four of this season’s six rotation members to graduation (gasp!), so reinforcements are desperately needed. Don’t worry; they’ve arrived in the form of an injury returnee, transfers, and some talented freshies, and will continue to tradition of excellent bars work.
There’s a lot more too it than that, if you care to take a look! Par for the course in a Karen Steger piece. (Editor’s note: you should definitely take a look. I even explain the skills you watch!)
No matter where you looked there was the evidence you needed to feel the way you wanted to feel. Think Mizzou is going to be average? You can point to the offensive line’s first half and their struggles to keep Pribula clean as evidence. Think they’re going to be good? Yeah, they figured it out and got things rolling.
I love watching football and learning nothing. Actually, I love learning nothing in general, it’s the best type of learning, in my humble opinion.
This was the first match of the season that head coach Stefanie Golan rolled with the same starting lineup in consecutive contests. Freshman defender Ava Lamothe is ready to make her mark as the lone newcomer who is receiving meaningful minutes.
Always good to remind little sibling who’s in charge!
- Over at Rock M+, we’re talking about Pro Football Focus scores from Central Arkansas, Blake Craig’s injury and how a Mizzou Hoops visit went for Dennis Gates and one of their bigger targets.
