San Diego Wave FC announced that they have mutually agreed with goalkeeper Leah Freeman to terminate her contract which ran through the 2026 season as she pursues “opportunities overseas.”
“We want to thank [Freeman] for her contributions to the Wave this year,” said Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “We have mutually agreed to part ways to allow [Freeman] the opportunity to pursue opportunities abroad, and we wish her all the best in the next chapter of her career.”
The Wave have
had many different goalkeepers in 2026 following the departure of Kailen Sheridan ahead of the 2026 season.
Freeman made six appearances for the Wave in 2026 after DiDi Haračić got injured in the first regular season NWSL match in March. Freeman played the next six matches, but did not face much action as the defense played excellently in front of her. When Haračić became available, Freeman fairly lost the starting spot.
The move is not unexpected as the team had four goalkeepers on the roster following the signing of the standout Spanish goalkeeper Sandra Paños from Club América during the midseason break, which sent Freeman further down the depth chart.
The Wave allowed their 19-year-old Colombian goalkeeper, Luisa Agudelo to play the first three matches in the return from the midseason break. Agudelo has made some strong saves, but appears to lack some experience dealing with a strong press.
San Diego play their next match on Sunday, July 26, against the Seattle Reign at home. The Reign have historically dominated the Wave holding a 9W-1L-3D record.
