Larry Bird had many incredible moments during his legendary Boston Celtics career, but most of them came on offense. Bird was not only wildly gifted offensively, but he was arrogant in the best way. He would regularly tell people what he was going to do and then did it. He got bored one night and decided to play left-handed. In one game, he hit a game-winning three, only to be told that the play didn’t count and had to be done over again.
So he just hit it again.
However, not all of his brilliance
was reserved for the offensive end. As Magic Johnson said, Bird was about winning and that was the bottom line.
And in the 1987 playoffs, Bird made a play that people still talk about.
The series with Detroit was tied 2-2 and the Pistons were poised to take a 3-2 lead – but Bird made a legendary steal and tottered on the baseline until Dennis Johnson cut to the basket and got the winning layup.
In this video, former Piston Rick Mahorn recalls that play and what went wrong for the Pistons.
