Coming off a huge win over Kentucky, the Tar Heels are back in action this evening to face off against the Georgetown Hoyas. This will be the first time that these two programs have faced one another since 2007 when Georgetown took down UNC 96-84 in overtime. This matchup doesn’t happen very often, and of course the most famous game between the two is the 1982 National Championship game when Mike Jordan morphed into his more well-known alias, Michael. That is why tonight is also retro night in Chapel
Hill, which is an awesome theme for what should be a really fun game.
The most important note for this game is that the Hoyas will be without senior center Vince Iwuchukwu, who is still recovering from a medical procedure that he had done last month. With their 7’1 big man still recovering, the Heels have an opportunity to let Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar get to work in the paint. It will also be important for Hubert Davis to get these two going because they both struggled to perform quite as well as they normally do against Kentucky, which sounds silly since both of them scored 15+ points. The Heels have been in a bit of a weird funk in the half court, though, so Davis’ big men really need to do their part to help rejuvenate that part of the court.
Another position that needs to do their part is the point guard position. Kyan Evans hasn’t been very good for a few games now, and it has gotten to the point where the offense looks dramatically different between when he’s on the floor and Derek Dixon. It’s starting to feel like Evans loses his willingness to run the offense effectively if the ball isn’t going in the basket for him, but this is merely an early hypothesis. If that isn’t the case, though, Davis needs to figure out how to get his starting point guard going, otherwise we may have to investigate an awkward transition to Dixon in the starting lineup for when ACC play begins.
If you are not able to get to Chapel Hill for this one, feel free to hang out with us in the comments! As always, we will be back after the game with post-game analysis and takes. Until then, Go Heels!
