Good morning, TSFers! Here we are at another weekend and a holiday weekend at that. Well done to all of us! We’re heading to the future father-in-law’s place for a backyard BBQ with family. He’s smoking a turkey. Do any of y’all have plans for Labor Day?
I’ve resolved to be a bit more intentional this year about Labor Day. There is a tendency, especially with civic holidays, to enjoy the day off and leave it at that. With some of my downtime this weekend, I’m going to read and think about the why
of Labor Day. I’d encourage everyone to do the same.
In a similar vein, I highly recommend reading a little about Gloria Steinem, the women’s rights advocate who passed this week. The NYT obituary is a pretty good starting place. Equally as important — ask the women in your life, particularly those who were adults / young adults in the 70s and 80s, about their experiences with the movement.
I guess I’m speaking more to those of y’all around my age cohort (millennials) now, but I have a tendency to not think about all the “history” that even my parents lived through. For example, my mother lived through state-mandated desegregation in the American South. Her recollections of what she lived through gives a different (better) picture from the dry stuff you find in history books.
For our international readers, what are some of the similar things / moments that the people in your life (or perhaps you) experienced?
In the Arsenal world, I’m still coalescing my thoughts on Gabriel Martinelli’s departure. His farewell video, man. Let’s just say the ninjas were cutting some onions. I’m hoping those feelings and ideas come together into a post that does it justice. Stay tuned.
