One of the things that Duke does under Jon Scheyer, and before him under Mike Krzyzewski, is maintaining connections to the players who came before the current team. We’ve seen Jay Bilas address the team in preseason in years past, and not long ago, Jabari Parker came back and met and addressed this year’s squad.
Jayson Tatum has taken this to a new level. Not only does he come back, but he’s also the Chief Basketball Officer. It’s a non-paid, volunteer position, but he clearly takes it seriously
and likes being involved.
This week, he was on campus, and spent some time schooling Captain Caleb Foster one-on-one (we know he’s not officially captain yet, but he will be soon enough), something Foster clearly appreciated.
This is pretty great in at least three ways. 1) The personal level. Foster has a shot at the NBA, and seeing Tatum’s skill level gives him an idea of where he stands. 2) It’s great for recruits to see this for the same reason, and it also underscores the value of the Brotherhood, and 3) Tatum, as a somewhat older member of the Brotherhood, gets to stay in touch with the program.
In short, it’s a win for everyone.
