Newcastle United are exploring future moves for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.
O’Rourke reported that Newcastle “could sign [the] ‘huge’ striker for well below
his £87million release clause,” with club sources indicating they will continue to monitor the player ahead of future windows.
Aghehowa, 21, is under contract with Porto until 2029, but Newcastle are hopeful any potential deal could be agreed for a lower figure.
“I don’t see them going out and signing Aghehowa in January, O’Rourke said on the Inside Track podcast. ”He’s under contract at Porto until 2029 and there is a release clause of around £87million in that contract. Although, any club that’s interested in Aghehowa will be hoping to probably sign him for less than that release clause as well.”
The report notes that Newcastle had previously submitted a formal offer for the Spaniard during the summer as they searched for a replacement for Alexander Isak.
The move, however, never materialized to Newcastle’s benefit, as that forced them into making a push for supernova striker Nick Woltemade. That said, the club reportedly remains interested and continues to track Aghehowa’s progress in Portugal.
Despite the transfer speculation, O’Rourke said Newcastle are “happy with their current selection of strikers” following Woltemade’s strong start and Yoane Wissa’s expected recovery from injury.
At the end of the day, should Wissa’s return be delayed or his performance inconsistent once he’s on the field, the Magpies could move for an additional forward, with the Porto man atop their shortlist.
