Newcastle United continues to assess younger defensive options ahead of future transfer windows, with left-back among the positions that could require reinforcement as Matthias Jaissle continues reshaping the squad and Lewis Hall keeps getting attention from elsewhere.
According to TransferFeed, Newcastle has been monitoring Atalanta defender Lorenzo Bernasconi, with the 22-year-old playing in front of Magpie scouts on several occasions during the summer.
“Newcastle United observed 22-year-old Italian
defender Lorenzo Bernasconi on several occasions during the summer,” TransferFeed wrote.
Roma and AC Milan have also been linked with the Italian, while transfer reporter Ekrem Konur doubled down on the reports, acknowledging that Newcastle remains among the clubs following him.
“Newcastle and Roma have also tracked the defender,” Konur reported.
There is some disagreement over Bernasconi’s current valuation, however, as TransferFeed placed Atalanta’s asking price between €20 million and €25 million, while Konur reported that the Serie A club values him at a higher figure of approximately €30-35 million.
TransferFeed also reported that Atalanta rejected a €15 million bid from Roma during last winter window, suggesting the club has already been reluctant to sell the player below the club’s asking price.
Bernasconi joined Atalanta in July 2025 and is under contract until June 2030. He has made five Serie A appearances this season after logging 23 games last year, assisting on three goals.
Would Bernasconi be worth pursuing if Atalanta demands closer to €30-35 million, or should Newcastle look elsewhere for a younger left-back, or for reinforcements in another area of the pitch? Share your thoughts in the comments.
