The Denver Broncos offense has the potential to be really dangerous this season.
The Broncos have the quarterback and the offensive line, and have finally added an offensive weapon in Jaylen Waddle. There’s the emergence of second-year receiver Pat Bryant. Plus, you have a new playcaller, Davis Webb, thrown into the mix.
But for Denver’s offense to reach that potential, it starts and stops with the running game. The Broncos must have a consistent and effective run game in 2026. If that happens, it opens
so much for Nix and Webb. It’ll make Denver that much harder to defend.
It’s the consistency that’s the biggest key.
When asked about the running game and consistency this week, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said:
“I think part of that was health last year when we lost (RB) J.K. (Dobbins). We had a young backfield. That all kind of leads to the things that help teams win: time and possession, playing good defense. These things are tied together. They’re not, ‘Vance (Joseph) and Davis, go do your thing.’ There’s a lot more to winning each week in regard to how we’re going to win this game and what we think we have to do to win this game.
“So, per our run game, there’s some really good things I think that we’re doing. Then, ultimately, you kind of settle in on what type of run team you are relative to a zone scheme, a gap scheme, and those types of things. So we certainly feel like we’re further along than we’ve been here in my three years, just with the depth in both groups.”
Of course, it’ll help if Dobbins stays healthy. When he’s on the field, he’s one of the better running backs in the NFL. Yet even if Dobbins misses some time, the Broncos have depth at the position. RJ Harvey is a year older, and Jonah Coleman seems like the real deal.
That not only helps with the consistency but also the confidence. Webb and Payton know they have the guys to be effective, regardless of what happens.
It also helps that Denver returns basically the whole offense from a season ago. That means the players know the system and what they need to do to have success.
“I think just the understanding of what techniques we’re trying to apply on which plays, which looks, which leverages,” Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey said to the media this week. “Just kind of honing in on that. We had a pretty good grasp of all that before, and like I said earlier, we’ve done it a long time together.
“Switching a couple of the techniques in and out depending on the scheme or the play or whatever it is, I think we’ve done a good job. It’s been a great camp. Our group is ready to go, and I’m excited to see where we can go as the season unfolds.”
If the Broncos get a consistent and effective running game this season on offense, watch out.
