Good morning, Broncos Country!
When Sean Payton announced Davis Webb was taking over play-calling for the Denver Broncos, it was a bit of a surprise. Payton is one of the best offensive minds of this generation.
While there is excitement, there’s still curiosity as to how this will work. And how Webb will do.
After the first OTA practices for Denver, Webb is already getting rave reviews.
“The guy is a mad scientist
when it comes to the offensive game, and he spent that past three years now being able to learn the game under Coach Payton, who we all know is an offensive genius,“ Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton said to the media on Thursday. ”He has one of the best offensive minds, and to be able to have that amount of time to learn the game from someone as talented and special as Coach Payton, it’s ultimately allowed him to be able to master this offense that he has been able to put together.
“It’s a combination of things that he has learned from Coach Payton and things that he has liked and seen from his own experience of playing and coaching in this league. I know he is ready. There is not a thought behind it. I know that he is ready and being able to listen to the way he coaches and the way he is teaching the terminology to us on the field and in the classroom has been amazing. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn from him and continuing to pick his offensive brain because he is like a mad scientist, and he has the best of both worlds from Coach Payton and himself.”
There’s still a long way to go before anyone knows how Webb will do, and how this will work. Plus, there’s still more for him to learn. The real test will come when Webb starts calling the games, especially in the regular season.
How does Webb adjust? If things aren’t going well on offense, what does he do? How does he respond as the play caller?
But as of now, even Payton said it’s going well.
“I think the biggest change really is going to be more in season than this time of the year,“ Payton said to the media on Thursday. (Former Broncos offensive coordinator) Joe (Lombardi) would head up those meetings. I think once you get into the season, and we’re all meeting collectively, and then he’s calling the game. … But I think it’s going well.”
