Vinicius Jr delivered when it mattered most, scoring both goals in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Manchester City to seal a commanding 5-1 aggregate victory. After the match, the Brazilian spoke to Movistar about the significance of the performance, Madrid’s growth as a team, and the mindset heading into the next round.
For Vinicius, the win represented more than just progression — it was a statement about the team’s evolution this season.
“It was a very important match for our confidence. Since the beginning
of the season we’ve had some good games, but we haven’t controlled the game as much as in this tie. It was a very difficult match against a great team, with a great coach. They have a lot of possession, but we knew we had to work hard and take advantage of our opportunities, even though I missed many,”
Despite acknowledging missed chances, Vinicius’ overall performance was decisive. His ability to stretch City in transition and punish them in key moments underlined Madrid’s approach across both legs..
He also pointed to the unique aura Real Madrid carry in Europe, especially as the competition enters its decisive stages:
“Yes, the Champions League is an important moment. We all know the good matches are coming, and when Real Madrid plays in this competition, everything changes. We’re ready for more, for whatever comes,”
Vinicius also touched on the emotional side of the victory, referencing past experiences and the connection with supporters:
“There’s always another chance, and here it is: we’ve won and we’re through to the quarterfinals, thanks to the fans and our coaching staff, who do everything for us. Football is a long season, and last season the fans here provoked me, so I was able to celebrate the way I felt was necessary.
“Let’s get Bayern.”
