Former Bayern Munich and German national team superstar Bastian Schweinsteiger gave his thoughts on X as to why Germany dropped a 2-1 decision to Ecuador:
Congratulations to Ecuador. They executed their game plan consistently. Today, Germany lacked clarity and dominance in possession. Against such a compact opponent, you need more penetration, better off-the-ball movement—and in conditions like these, the courage to play the long ball. #ECUGER
Schweinsteiger is not wrong and highlights several issues
that have been prominent since the team came together for training camp. The big question for the Germans will be whether or not the coaching staff and team can correct these concerns ahead of the knockout stages.
After the first round of knockouts, the competition will be fierce and Germany might not be able to afford to scuffle with some of these problems like it did in the group stage.
