We’ve been under the weather a bit and missed the last couple of Chronicle Player Previews, both of highly promising young big men.
This one is of freshman Cameron Williams.
Williams is a 7-0 tall player from Phoenix who, while still quite slim, has vast potential. His high school coach compared him to Kevin Durant. It’s impossible to know if he has that kind of ceiling, but it’s a flattering
comparison.
From the Chronicle: “The arsenal that Williams brings to the hardwood will likewise assert itself powerfully on the defensive end of the floor. With his size, length and athleticism, the forward has been able to cover a lot of space while snatching plenty of blocks and rebounds. He’s also displayed an awareness and quickness well fit for intercepting passes and batting away loose balls. At the same time, though, Williams has a thinner build that may cause a few initial struggles against the sheer scale and physicality of Division I competition. Developing strength-wise will be key to further improving his ability to stay strong up against bigs on other teams, as well as to finish through contact in the paint.”
We saw a glimpse of his talent against Belmont, as he came in and immediately snuffed a shot.
In that game, he came off the bench behind Maxime Meyer, which surprised everyone outside the program. As it turns out, he had been ill, which is bound to be limiting.
Even so, in a short stretch, he showed a lot. There’s much more to come. We’re looking forward to getting a better look at him when Tennessee comes to Cameron on October 20.
