The transfer portal is open, and Kentucky Football will be aggressive in the portal, particularly in the market for a starting wide receiver. That movement is now beginning, and the Wildcats are already
being linked to one of the more proven pass catchers available.
Missouri Tigers wide receiver Marquis Johnson officially entered the transfer portal on Dec. 17, and Kentucky has since emerged as a contender. On3’s Pete Nakos reported on New Year’s Eve that early schools connected to Johnson include Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Kansas State. Johnson has one year of eligibility remaining.
A former 3-star recruit in the 2023 class out of Metro Houston, Johnson spent three seasons at Missouri under Eli Drinkwitz. He played 891 offensive snaps across 37 career games, making nine starts while totaling 66 receptions for 1,075 yards and six touchdowns. He was part of back-to-back double-digit win campaigns for the Tigers in 2023 and 2024.
Despite standing just 5-foot-11 and 187 pounds, Johnson primarily lined up outside and thrived as a vertical threat. Three of his touchdowns as a true freshman came on throws traveling 20 or more yards in the air, showcasing his ability to stretch defenses.
Kentucky fans may unfortunately remember his name from a momentum-shifting fake punt play during Missouri’s 2023 win over Kentucky.
After a quieter junior year, Johnson is now seeking a fresh start. Kentucky could provide that opportunity, especially with new wide receivers coach Joe Price III bringing strong Houston-area recruiting ties to Lexington. As portal season heats up, the Wildcats appear firmly in the mix to add an experienced SEC playmaker to their offense.
