Wednesday morning, the Cleveland Browns decided on Todd Monken as their next head coach. It was long thought that Monken was a fallback candidate to the likes of younger options in Nate Scheelhaase and Grant
Udinski, but to actually see it come to fruition is still a bit of a surprise. On top of that, it also means that the team decided against making defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz their new head coach. What is next for Schwartz, though?
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns still want Schwartz to stay on as defensive coordinator:
For Schwartz, it has to be a bit of a disappointment not to land a head coaching job here. From our perspective, it would seem to make sense for him to stay put in Cleveland: he is beloved by the defensive players, he has a solid unit, and other teams aren’t exactly knocking on his door to be their head coach. However, it’s also worth noting that another ESPN report says Monken should be the one who makes the decision on Schwartz’ future:
It’s unclear if Monken will retain Schwartz; owner Jimmy Haslam previously said he “absolutely” would like to keep Schwartz in the organization. Berry, while saying he is satisfied with the state of the defense, added that staff decisions will be the “prerogative” of the new head coach.
Will Schwartz want to stay, and will Monken want him to stay? We may have an answer as the day progresses.
