MENDY APPREICIATION
He gets a lot of hate for being ultra defensive and scared to attack, and i’ve even questioned his lack of attacking prowess. But when you see that Vinicius doesn’t track back at times and remember the plague we sued to suffer on the left hand side before he came. You’ll see why he was brought in initially and appreciate him more. Mendy in his prime has been one of our World Class defensive stalwarts on the left side. Can hardly be beat on his day and will use his body intelligently to guard enemies off the ball with his immense strength. A generation raised to think that ultra-attacking leftbacks are the only good left backs there are, may never be able to appreciate Mendy or accept the simple fact that a leftback still has to defend…and defend well. As it’s part of the game. In a time of fast-paced, inverted and some tricky false wingers, i really don’t care about how good a left back can compliment our attack, he better drop back fast and compliment the defense just as well too. And not get caught out, up-front. After 7 months of being out, he’s come back and put in a good shift.
