The injury to freshman Calvin Russell had Syracuse fans lamenting another key player lost to a serious injury. With a position group that was already looking to replace the departures of Darrell Gill, Johntay Cook, Emmanuel Ross, it seems like another damaging blow to the Orange well before the 2026 season begins.
There’s no doubt expectations were high for the 5-star who chose Syracuse over Michigan and Miami, but what is left in the room as we head towards next weekend’s spring game? Let’s take
a look:
In January the Orange added inncoming transfers: Cole Weaver (Miami OH), Zamondre Merriweather (JUCO), Elijah Moore (FSU), and Matthew Outten (Penn St). Another highly regarded freshman in Amare Gough was also an early enrollee and has been with Syracuse all spring. We’ll have to see how this group looks in next week’s spring game as we get a sense of who could find themselves in the rotation this Fall.
While Syracuse did lose a lot of receivers, they are returning Umari Hatcher, Darius Johnson, Tyshawn Russell, Darien Williams, Demetres Samuel, Jr., Julian McFadden and Terrell Wilfong. Hatcher is the most experienced of the group and while he didn’t play much in 2025, he could be poised to take advantage of a second chance.
While I’ll be interested to watch the newcomers, the returners do offer some hope that Syracuse can replace the production lost. Russell was a starting slot receiver before his season ended early. Johnson was a player who impressed the staff before an early injury limited him to some late-season appearances. An injury kept McFadden out all year, but the protege of former NFL standout Torrey Smith could surprise this fall, but the wildcard could be the class of 2025’s top recruit in Samuel.
Recently the newly-turned 18-year old Samuel said he was doing more work at receiver this spring and hoping to get more offensive snaps in 2026. Last year the Orange limited how much Samuel was used on offense and in the return game, but after a full year in the program, he hopes to be given more opportunites to touch the ball this season.
Which of the receivers are you keeping a close eye on next week?
