Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has reported that Newcastle United are working on reforms to their loan system — including introducing callback clauses — in response to criticism over the lack of playing time for loanees like Antonio Cordero.
Hope says the decision-making around loans is currently “a collective approach involving head of football strategy Jack Ross and Shola Ameobi and Peter Ramage, who head up the loans department. Wilson will also be involved now.”
Cordero, an 18-year-old Spaniard signed
from Málaga on a free summer move, has played fewer than 90 minutes at Belgian side K.V.C. Westerlo, despite being expected to develop via regular senior action.
The club is reportedly considering contract clauses that allow them to recall players who are not featuring as anticipated.
“Sources say that, should contract terms allow, players who are not featuring as expected will likely be recalled,” Hope reported.
For Wilson, one of his early priorities will be assessing the suitability of loan destinations and ensuring that Newcastle get developmental value from each move, something the club has done before, as was the case with Yankuba Minteh’s loan spell at Feyenoord.
