In this space, we look at the snap-to-hold operation on field goals and extra points. We’ve got 5 we’re looking at this week. Trey Smack made all 5 kicks (2 extra points, 3 field goals), but how did the operation look?
Let’s start with the snap location for the holder, Daniel Whelan:
Kick 1: Extra Point (Made)
Snap up and to the body of Whelan, rotation has the laces pointed in. Nice easy catch, hold and spin for Whelan and a clean kick by Smack.
Kick 2: 25 yard Field Goal (Made)
Snap is right in the sweet spot: up and over the hold point. Whelan makes the catch
with his fingers on the laces. Good spin and hold, with the ball leaning slightly forward and away from Smack. Clean kick, splitting the uprights.
Kick 3: Extra Point (Made)
Good snap from Orzech, over the hold point. It looks like Whelan catches the back of the ball, so there’s a slight hiccup in the hold, but nothing Whelan can’t recover from. He gets the hold down and Smack splits the uprights.
Kick 4: 44 yard Field Goal (Made)
The snap is slightly higher than the last one, but it’s over the hold point. Whelan catches this one by the laces. Good hold and Smack knocks it though.
Kick 5: 29 yard Field Goal (Made)
Snap is up and into the body of Whelan. Whelan catches it by the laces, good hold, good kick.
With the exception of the slight hiccup from Whelan on Kick 3 (which did not impact the overall timing of the process), this is the cleanest game we’ve seen from this operation in a game this year. Good game.
