Lehigh safety Mekhai Smith has committed to transferring to Minnesota. He recorded 56 total tackles, four interceptions, three pass break-ups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Smith has two years of eligibility remaining.
Smith was an impact player from the moment he stepped on campus, seeing nearly 300 snaps as a true freshman and recording 40 total
tackles. He developed into one of the top safeties in the Patriot League this year.
This is the second transfer safety the Gophers have signed this month, with Southwest Minnesota State defensive back Parker Knutson also grabbing an oar. Smith and Knutson add depth to a safety room that already includes returning starters Kerry Brown and Aidan Gousby and promising young players like Garrison Monroe and Zack Harden. Smith could also see the field at the nickel position, where the Gophers are losing Darius Green and Jai’Onte McMillan to graduation.
