Matt Rhule is looking to put the finishing touches on an outstanding 2027 recruiting class while laying the foundations for another talented group in 2028. With Washington coming to Memorial Stadium on Halloween night, the Huskers have the perfect stage to sell their vision of the future.
There is something fitting about Nebraska hosting one of its biggest recruiting weekends of the season on Halloween. Memorial Stadium will be dressed in black, the lights will be shining, and more than 85,000 passionate
Husker fans will be doing everything they can to create an intimidating atmosphere for Washington.
For Matt Rhule and his coaching staff, the occasion represents far more than another Big Ten matchup. It is an opportunity to show some of the country’s most talented high school football players exactly what Nebraska football can become.
The Huskers have one foot firmly planted in 2027, with an impressive recruiting class already assembled and a handful of high-profile targets still on the board. At the same time, the coaching staff has turned its attention toward 2028, where another collection of talented prospects across multiple positions is firmly in its sights.
Nebraska has made considerable progress under Rhule, both in recruiting and on the field. However, there is one piece of the puzzle that remains frustratingly elusive: consistently beating quality Big Ten opposition.
Saturday night presents another opportunity to change that narrative.
Finishing Off a Brilliant 2027 Recruiting Class
Nebraska’s 2027 recruiting class has given Husker fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Headlined by five-star quarterback Trae Taylor, the group features talent across the offensive and defensive lines, secondary and skill positions.
More importantly, the class has developed a sense of togetherness that could prove just as valuable as its individual talent.
Taylor has emerged as a leader of the group, with several committed players making repeated trips to Lincoln and actively encouraging other recruits to join them. That enthusiasm is particularly important when Nebraska is trying to convince highly rated prospects from across the country to make their college home in the Midwest.
The Huskers will welcome back several prominent 2027 commitments this weekend, including four-star offensive lineman Jordan Agbanoma, cornerback Jailen Hill and defensive lineman Nehemiah Ombati. Edge rusher Ma’atoe Moe, defensive lineman Jayden Travers and tight end Joey Hunter are also expected to attend.
Their presence is important for two reasons. It gives the coaching staff another opportunity to strengthen relationships with players already committed to the program, while also allowing those recruits to play a role in attracting the next generation.
But Nebraska is not finished with 2027 just yet.
One of the most intriguing remaining possibilities is five-star tight end Ahmad Hudson, who is committed to LSU but remains a player Nebraska is pursuing. The Huskers are working to get him back to campus before signing day, potentially as early as this weekend.
Nebraska is also exploring opportunities with other pass catchers and defensive prospects who could become late additions or flip candidates.
Landing another highly rated prospect would be the perfect finishing touch to a class that has already generated considerable excitement.
In today’s recruiting environment, however, securing a commitment is only part of the battle. Holding on to that talent until signing day is equally important.
Programs such as Texas A&M and Florida remain interested in Agbanoma, while Moe has also attracted attention elsewhere. Getting those players back around the coaching staff, their future teammates and the Nebraska fan base is another opportunity to reinforce their decisions.
The 2028 Recruiting Machine Is Already Moving
While Nebraska looks to complete its 2027 class, the coaching staff is wasting little time establishing relationships with the next wave of prospects.
The 2028 visitor group is particularly impressive because of the variety of positions represented. Nebraska is targeting high-level talent at wide receiver, running back, tight end, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker and throughout the secondary.
Four-star receiver Ryan Richmond-McDavis is one of the most exciting offensive prospects expected in Lincoln. The St. Louis standout possesses exceptional speed, reportedly recording one of the fastest times on the Under Armour camp circuit over the summer.
For a program that has invested heavily in improving its offensive skill positions, securing an early relationship with an explosive receiver like Richmond-McDavis makes plenty of sense.
Another significant visitor is four-star tight end Izzy Johnigan, one of the nation’s top prospects at his position. Johnigan has already experienced a Nebraska game day this month, having attended the Indiana matchup, and is returning for another look.
That repeat visit suggests genuine interest, but Nebraska must demonstrate that the progress being made on the field can translate into victories.
On the defensive side, four-star safety CJ Craig-James is a particularly interesting name. Nebraska entered his recruitment relatively late but has managed to secure a visit despite strong competition from SEC programs, including Auburn.
The Huskers’ defensive performances should give the coaching staff plenty to discuss with Craig-James.
Nebraska enters the weekend leading the nation in third-down defense, with opponents converting just 19.3% of their opportunities. The Blackshirts also rank among the country’s top 20 in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense.
For defensive recruits, there is now tangible evidence that Nebraska can compete physically with some of the best programs in the country.
In-state linebacker Owen Price is another hugely important target. The Huskers face competition from regional rivals including Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas State, making it essential that Nebraska continues demonstrating its upward trajectory.
Meanwhile, four-star edge rusher Steven McClendon and three-star offensive lineman TJ Brandon will travel from Georgia, while California running back Noel Washington and Florida athlete Lamar Garrison add further national representation.
This is not a recruiting class being built around one position or one geographic region. Nebraska is attempting to establish a national footprint while continuing to prioritise talent closer to home.
Nebraska’s 2027 Class Could Be Its Greatest Recruiting Asset
One of the most encouraging aspects of Nebraska’s current recruiting operation is the willingness of committed players to help recruit others.
The 2027 class is doing more than simply showing up for photographs and enjoying a weekend in Lincoln.
Taylor and his fellow commitments have developed strong relationships, communicating regularly and encouraging one another to return to campus. When those players interact with younger recruits, they are providing something that even the most persuasive coaching staff cannot manufacture: genuine enthusiasm from future teammates.
For a 2028 prospect considering Nebraska alongside established national powers, seeing committed players repeatedly travel across the country to spend time together can make a significant impression.
It demonstrates that the players themselves believe in the direction of the program.
This is particularly important because Nebraska is attempting to build sustainable success rather than relying on one outstanding recruiting cycle.
The Huskers need to stack talented classes year after year if they want to compete with the likes of Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan and the other leading programs in the Big Ten.
The 2027 class has the potential to be an important building block. The challenge now is making sure 2028 is every bit as impressive.
There Is No Better Selling Point Than Memorial Stadium Under the Lights
Recruiting visits are about much more than facilities, presentations and conversations with coaches.
They are about giving young players a feeling of what it would be like to run onto the field wearing a Nebraska uniform.
And there are few better opportunities to create that feeling than a Halloween Blackout at Memorial Stadium.
The Huskers will wear their alternate black uniforms, the crowd will be encouraged to dress in black, and the traditional Blackshirts logo will feature prominently at midfield.
With a 7 p.m. kickoff, Nebraska can showcase the full spectacle of a prime-time Big Ten football game.
The late start also provides an important logistical advantage. High school players competing on Friday nights have more time to travel to Lincoln, allowing Nebraska to attract national prospects who might struggle to attend an early kickoff.
The atmosphere should be electric, and there is little doubt that recruits will be impressed by the passion surrounding Nebraska football.
That passion remains one of the program’s greatest selling points.
Even after years of frustration, Nebraska fans continue filling Memorial Stadium, following recruiting developments and investing emotionally in the future of the program.
For a teenager deciding where to spend the next three or four years, the opportunity to play in front of that kind of support is enormously appealing.
However, the atmosphere can only do so much.
Washington Must Be the Stepping Stone
The elephant in the room is Nebraska’s inability to consistently turn competitive performances against top opposition into victories.
The Huskers enter Saturday at 5-2 after consecutive three-point defeats to Indiana and Oregon. Against Oregon, Nebraska held a second-half lead before surrendering the winning score in the final minute.
Those performances demonstrate how far the program has progressed, but they also highlight the fine margins that continue to separate Nebraska from the Big Ten’s leading teams.
Recruits will be well aware of this.
The coaching staff can point to improved talent, a physical defense, a more balanced offense and the development taking place throughout the roster. Those are legitimate selling points.
But at some stage, Nebraska needs to stop talking about how close it is and start showing that it can consistently win these games.
Washington represents an important opportunity.
The Huskies arrive in Lincoln at 4-3 and have struggled to find consistency in Big Ten play. Nebraska will be expected to win at home, particularly after having an extra week to prepare.
For the Huskers, simply being competitive is no longer enough.
A convincing performance would send a message to the recruits watching from the sidelines that Nebraska is ready to take another step forward.
It would also provide the current 2027 commitments with further evidence that their belief in the program is justified.
There is a difference between selling potential and demonstrating progress. Saturday night offers Nebraska the opportunity to do both.
Building Something That Lasts
The recruiting calendar never really stops, and neither can Nebraska’s efforts to close the talent gap on the Big Ten’s elite.
The 2027 class represents another significant step forward in Rhule’s attempt to build a roster capable of competing at the highest level. Adding one or two more blue-chip prospects would only strengthen that foundation.
But the work being done with the 2028 class could prove equally important.
With highly rated players from across the country preparing to experience Memorial Stadium, Nebraska has an opportunity to establish relationships that could shape the program for years to come.
For now, the challenge is straightforward.
Get the recruits to Lincoln. Show them the passion of the fan base. Demonstrate the culture being built within the program.
And, most importantly, beat Washington.
Nebraska has spent too many seasons being the team that almost gets there. The talent is improving, the defense looks the part, and the recruiting operation is gathering momentum.
A Halloween night victory in front of a packed Memorial Stadium would provide the perfect backdrop to show the next generation of Huskers that the program is ready to turn potential into results.
The 2027 class is nearly complete. The 2028 class is only beginning.
Saturday night is an opportunity to move both forward.
