Josh Allen threw for three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the Buffalo Bills opened the new Highmark Stadium by dismantling the Detroit Lions, 41-31 on Thursday Night Football. Allen has accounted for nine total touchdowns for a Bills offense that has scored 77 points through the first two weeks of the season. Allen became the first player in league history to have at least five passing TDs and three rushing TDs through the first two games of a season.
After two weeks, today’s edition
of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off by discussing what we’ve learned about the Bills after the first two weeks, including just how good Allen and Buffalo’s offense can be in the first year with Joe Brady as head coach.
Check out the assessments below and then let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
Just how good is Buffalo’s offense?
Through two weeks, the Bills hung 36 points on the Houston Texans, who have arguably the league’s best defense. Then, on a short week (albeit against a banged-up Lions secondary), Buffalo amassed 41 points and had 34 first downs on 66 offensive plays (not counting kneel downs) for a 51.5% ratio of first downs to plays run, becoming the first team since the 2013 season to boast such an impressive number of first downs to plays run.
One year after James Cook and the offensive line led the league in rushing yards, Allen has displayed great touch with his deep passes, making the most of receivers like Dalton Kincaid (225 yards and one TD on 12 receptions), DJ Moore (100 yards and one TD on five receptions in the opener before getting hurt vs. Detroit), Joshua Palmer (both of his catches have gone for TDs, averaging 38.5 yards per reception), Khalil Shakir (88 yards on seven catches), and Keon Coleman (64 yards on seven grabs).
Meanwhile, Buffalo has still maintained an impressive rushing attack, with Cook, Allen and co. averaging 145 rushing yards per game through two weeks.
Just how good is Buffalo’s offense? Bills fans have to feel good knowing Allen and the offense have closely resembled an unstoppable juggernaut against two quality opponents so far.
