Last Time Out: Marquette led by nine with just under five minutes left in the first half, gave up a 17-4 run
to end the half to trail by four at the break, and lost by nine, 78-69. It was a three-point game with just under nine minutes left, and Georgetown threw a 17-5 run at MU after that point to put the thing out of reach and drop the Golden Eagles to 0-1 in Big East play.
Since Last We Met: The win over Marquette nudged the Hoyas over to 8-3 overall as well as getting them started in Big East action with a win. Since then, it’s been pretty much straight downhill. Georgetown has gone just 5-11 since, with a 4-11 mark in the league. They got off to a 1-7 start in Big East action, dropping seven straight after beating Marquette, including a very gross 56-50 loss to DePaul in Chicago.
Then, for a brief moment, they steered out of the nose dive. With the season pretty much a wreck already, Ed Cooley coached his squad to a road win over Providence in a game that PC led 61-44 with just under 12 minutes left (I appreciate the comedy value here, Ed) to start off a four game winning streak. Home against DePaul by nine, at Butler by 13 by holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the final three minutes, and at home over Creighton by eight, partially powered by a 12-0 burst right after halftime.
That winning streak wasn’t going to get them back on track for the NCAA tournament or anything, but +4 is obviously better than -7, or even -6 given that they had a win over Coppin State in there. Since then: bad.
Four straight losses, including making UConn worry juuuuuust a little bit in the final minute in Storrs and going out very ugly against Seton Hall back on Saturday. 51-47?? Disgusting basketball, with neither side shooting better than 46% on twos and Seton Hall missing all 18 of their three-pointers but winning anyway. BY THE WAY: Imagine putting up a 16-1 run in a game where you held your opponent to just 51 points AND LOSING. That’s what Georgetown did. They were up 27-17 after that run with about 90 seconds left in the first half and then lost the rest of the game 34-20.
Tempo Free Fun: In the first meeting, Marquette gave up 1.21 points per possession to Georgetown largely because the Hoyas shot 55% on two-pointers in that game. Now, it’s worth mentioning that the first Georgetown game was the contest that Zaide Lowery sat quietly on the bench and did not move before not traveling to Creighton in MU’s next game and then leaving the team. Am I saying that there were some weird vibes at work in that game that miiiiight have affected the Golden Eagles ability to lock in on defense? Seems reasonable.
Since that game, Marquette has held Big East foes to just 51.8% shooting inside the arc. No, that’s not great, not really, but it’s better than what GU did to them, so that’s great news in general. There isn’t one particular Hoya who had a good time against Marquette, or rather had a very good time against Marquette. They all shot the ball well… okay, everyone except KJ Lewis who went 0-for-4 off the bench inside the arc in 14 minutes. Yes, that’s Georgetown’s leading scorer now. The other part that makes you wonder if Marquette can clamp down on Georgetown? The Hoyas are shooting just 47.5% on twos in Big East play this season. Only Seton Hall is worse.
One change to things that Marquette will have to watch out for this time around is Vince Iwuchukwu. The 7’1” big man from Texas missed the game in Milwaukee as part of a stretch of 10 straight contests that he was out. Since then, he’s been in and out of the starting lineup, swapping back and forth with Julius Halaifonua and averaging 10.9 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 54% inside the arc. That gives the Hoyas multiple 7-footer options to try and bully around a less than 100% mobile Ben Gold on the interior, so we’ll have to see how the Golden Eagles adjust to that particular problem.
Ultimately, it comes down to this: Either Marquette finds a way to play 40 consistent minutes of basketball and they have a chance to win this game, like they did when they were leading St. John’s in the second half last time out….. or they don’t, and they get swept by the Hoyas, because they can’t put a full and complete game together just like what happened when St. John’s leveled up on MU last week at Fiserv Forum.
