The Pittsburgh Steelers enter Week 11 at 5-4 following a 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, marking their third loss in four games. In the aftermath of the game, the Steelers released safety Juan
Thornhill, whom they signed this past offseason. In conjunction with that move, the Steelers brought back rookie safety Sebastian Castro, who was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad.
In his weekly press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about Thornhill’s release and bringing Castro back to Pittsburgh.
“The play wasn’t up to snuff,” Tomlin said. “And Castro was available to us. We went through the team development process with Castro. I thought he had a good camp, good preseason. He played his tail off in that practice with the Bucs, I think that’s why they stole him from us. And we had an opportunity to re-acquire him. We’ve absorbed some attrition since he left, and so it was an opportunity to get him back. It was more about Castro and less about Juan.”
The Steelers signed the former All-Big Ten safety as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa following the 2025 NFL Draft. Castro sat down with Behind The Steel Curtain in May, saying Pittsburgh was “the perfect spot” for him to land. Now, he returns to the Steelers with a chance to show what he is capable of.
