The Baltimore Ravens interviewed Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph for their head coaching vacancy on Thursday.
Joseph, 53, is in the middle of his second stint with the Broncos. He was
hired as their head coach in 2017, but he was fired after two seasons with double-digit losses. After four years in Arizona with solid results and a brief stint as interim head coach, Joseph came back to Denver to join Sean Payton’s staff in 2023.
Joseph’s re-debut with the Broncos did not go well. They ranked among the league’s bottom 10 defenses in 2023, but Joseph has since molded them into one of the NFL’s very best. Denver’s defense has dominated opponents and propelled the team to the playoffs in each of the last two years. This year, they ranked third in points allowed and second in total defense.
Joseph’s unit also led the league with 68 sacks in the regular season. In second place is the Falcons, with 57. And on the other end of the spectrum is the Ravens, with 30. So there is obvious appeal to bringing in Joseph, not just to scheme up pressure, but also to get the most out of individual players. His tenure in Denver was marked by team success as well as the individual development of edge rushers Nik Bonitto and Jonathan Cooper. Both took notable leaps after Joseph’s arrival. Baltimore certainly has not gotten the most out of their young edge rushers in the past several years, despite consistently investing in the position during the draft. Joseph could offer a path to do that.
