On Tuesday night, the footballing world paused to watch history unfold. At a packed stadium in Buenos Aires, Lionel Messi stepped out in the iconic national shirt for his official home farewell match against Benin. Surrounded by tens of thousands of adoring fans and his FIFA World Cup-winning teammates, the GOAT receives the proper send-off he earned.
It was a striking moment, but for FC Barcelona supporters, it brings a sharp reminder of unfinished business. While Argentina showered their captain
with gratitude and love, Barcelona fans are left waiting. The grand goodbye, a packed stadium chanting his name one last time under the floodlights, has yet to happen.
The reality is that Messi’s departure from Camp Nou remains a painful moment in modern club history. Despite promises from the board, the long-awaited Barcelona tribute continues to hang in limbo.
To understand why a proper farewell is so necessary, you have to look back at August 2021. Messi did not leave because he wanted a new challenge at Paris Saint-Germain. He left because the club collapsed financially under the weight of previous mismanagement.
He arrived in Catalonia to sign his contract, but instead, he was told at the final moment that league financial rules made the deal impossible, and he should look for a new team.
Instead of a full stadium bidding farewell to a man who delivered dozens of trophies and hundreds of goals, the world watched a hastily arranged, tearful press conference as a goodbye for all the memories. The visual of Messi wiping away tears before leaving for Paris became the sad final image of his time at the club. It was abrupt. It was not befitting of his glittering legacy.
Since that summer, Joan Laporta has insisted that the club will make amends for that. The message from the president: once the redevelopment of the Camp Nou is complete, Barcelona will host the grandest homage in football history.
Complicating matters: The trust between Messi’s camp and the Laporta administration broke down during that contract collapse.
The unsuccessful attempt to bring Messi back in 2023, after he left PSG, further complicated things. Barça promised him that they would officially sign him once they got the all-clear from the league again. This time, Messi did not wait around to see if the club would deliver. He left and joined Inter Miami in MLS, the team he is with to this day.
They will have to make peace in order to make the match happen. But Messi has never hidden his affection for his club, the club he joined as a youngster and left as a legend.
If an official tribute ever happens, the timing depends on the stadium being ready and Messi’s schedule. Camp Nou is partially reopen following extensive renovations. The stadium is open for matches right now, but there is some work to be done that would put it out of commission next year.
One potential target for a tribute match could be in early 2028, when the Camp Nou fully reopens after the roof is fully installed. Any potential match would also need to fit around his commitments with Inter Miami and his eventual retirement from professional football, which has not been announced but is sadly creeping ever closer.
