The Dallas Cowboys appear to have some things that they need to figure out.
As the team arrived in Oxnard, California for training camp on Monday, one of the early headlines to emerge involved Tyler Smith and that he did not know what position he was going to play. Given that he is the best interior lineman in the NFL, that raised a few eyebrows.
Things happen in the NFL, though. Sometimes you have to move players around and it is possible that it works best for the team to play Smith at left tackle
as opposed to left guard. The purpose of training camp is to mine answers like that out.
It seems that another question to work on is where another Tyler is going to play. No, not Tyler Guyton, although if Smith is at left tackle then Guyton is going to have to figure something else out.
Brian Schottenheimer said during the team’s introductory press conference on Tuesday that Smith would get work at tackle and that Tyler Booker would get work at center. Hmm. That’s interesting.
Schotty also noted that Terence Steele could be moved around. This is purely me speculating, but maybe the Cowboys are considering some sort of offensive line like:
- LT: Tyler Smith
- LG: T.J. Bass
- C: Tyler Booker
- RG: Cooper Beebe
- RT: Tyler Guyton
That is just one possible hypothetical. Obviously Terence Steele is a factor, too. The point is the Cowboys are clearly dedicated to fielding their best five and that there are a number of possible amalgamations on the path there.
