The Duke Chronicle has two interesting articles up now, with one looking at where Duke recruits have come from in recent years and the other about Darren Harris, his connection to Duke and his transformation
from last season.
The recruiting article is called Mapping The Brotherhood: The geographies of Duke’s freshman classes and it’s more of a data-oriented article than we expected. We all know that Paul VI has become a feeder school for the Blue Devils, but where has everyone else come from? It’s kind of cool to see the breakdown. It didn’t occur to us, for instance, that of the international players, only South Sudan has as many as two (Canada will match that next season when Maxime Meyer joins RJ Barrett as recent Canadian recruits). The map is pretty cool too.
Note to the Chronicle: JJ Redick comes from Western Virginia (the Roanoke area), not the DMV.
Harris is an intriguing figure. We weren’t authorized to talk about this, but we heard from a very reliable source last year that he was absolutely coming back.
This article was the first time that we learned that his mother and father are huge Duke fans and that, like teammate Sebastian Wilkins, his Duke teammate, his family brought him to Cameron at a young age and took him in to check it out.
Last year, he wasn’t going to get a ton of minutes, but he knew that. This year?
Different story.
Harris is going to get minutes because of his own hard work. As much as his high school and teammate Patrick Ngongba, Harris had work to do on improving his body.
Well, he’s made a lot of progress since last season. Harris has really upgraded his body. Check out what Jon Scheyer, Chris Carrawell and Caleb Foster say about his hard work.
It’s really going to pay off this season. He’s going to be fun to watch.
